Cloomber Hall is a dreary, long untenanted dwelling on the lonely Machars peninsula in southwest Scotland. In spring of 1881, the West family moves from Edinburgh to Brakesome, a rural estate that is a short distance from Cloomber Hall. The West family is comprised of John Hunter West, a highly regarded Oriental and Sanskrit scholar and his young adult son and daughter, John Fothergill and Esther. John Hunter West, who has been struggling financially, is to act as land steward and agent for his half-brother William Farintosh, the Laird of Brakesome, who has been ordered by his doctor to spend some time in a more congenial climate.

Soon after their move to Brakesome, the West family learns that Cloomer Hall is to be rented and occupied by Major-General John Berthier Heatherstone, retired from Her Majesty’s Indian Service, and his family. General Heatherstone is exceedingly reclusive and appears to be fearful for his life and his future. The general’s fear seems to emanate from some long-ago event that occurred during his Indian service. The source of the general’s fear is known to his wife and to his son Mordaunt, but not to his daughter Gabriel.

“The Mystery of Cloomber” is a gothic-like suspense and mystery story, but with relatively little suspense and only moderate mystery. The tale is narrated by John Fothergill West who claims to have no literary ambitions, only a desire to set forth the truth of the mystery as known personally to him or related to him by reliable sources. Conan Doyle admirably achieved Fothergill’s stated goal. There is relatively little that I consider to be of literary merit or entertainment value in this tale. It certainly is not one of Sir Arthur’s better works. The author included little of his normal humor and typically outstanding detailed descriptions, but he unnecessarily belabored use of a Scottish brogue by some of the bumpkin characters. I did read the entire book, but I cannot really recommend it except for the purpose of tasting a somewhat different sample of the author’s offerings.

The Mystery of Cloomber Arthur Conan Doyle 9781176863026 Books Reviews

This was a good story, well plotted, as one would expect from Conan Doyle, and with full enough characters to hold interest. I was pleasantly surprised by the tale's sympathy with and respect for the Indians, suggesting an understanding of racism and colonialism that we don't often see from English writers of Doyle's time--or even from Doyle himself in other contexts.
I really liked the style of writing, which was a little antique, by modern standards. But the style gave a real atmosphere of the period to the piece. I really enjoyed it.
Never having read this book before, I was unsure of what to expect. I found that this is quite a captivating book that leave the reader not wanting to put it down. Would recommend for someone who has a bit of time to kill...you won't want to put this down!
I found this to be a protracted story laced with strange Scottish language. A little humorous, mostly
long-winded. I pushed through the book to know how it ended. It was tedious to read. The story would have
been better if it had normal language throughout. I liked the characters, though they "talked funny".
I ENJOYED READING THIS EARLY WORK OF SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE IMMENSELY; HOWEVER, IF NOT FOR THE FACT THAT I HAVE BEEN STUDYING 19TH CENTURY LITERATURE RATHER INTENSELY FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS, I WOULD HAVE BEEN AT A LOSS TO UNDERSTAND TERMINOLOGY USED IN THE STORY SUCH AS "MONOMANIA." IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO HAVE SOME NOTES IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK TRANSLATING PHRASES SUCH AS "ADHOESIT FAUCIBUS ORA" AND "STETS VERNEINEN."

THE INFLUENCE OF WILKIE COLLINS' THE MOONSTONE IS PRETTY EVIDENT AND I BELIEVE THAT SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE LEARNED AT LEAST SOME OF HIS METHODS FOR BUILDING SUSPENSE FROM THAT AUTHOR TOO. SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE WAS CORRECT, I BELIEVE, IN URGING READERS TO APPRECIATE EASTERN PHILOSOPHIES AND CULTURES, BUT ANCIENT OR OLDER DOESN'T NECESSARILY MEAN BETTER OR SUPERIOR.
I never knew this book existed until I found it while browsing. I've read all the Sherlock Holmes mysteries and was happy to find other writings of Sir Doyle's. While the story contains interesting characters and a suspensful plot from the start, one of the things I take issue with is the slow pace. While slightly gripping at first, just past the middle and basically to the end, the story lags. I'm also not fond of the overindulgent, philosophical focus on mysticism, to the extent of borderlining on a ?psuedo-attempt at indoctrination?. I realize Sir Doyle was involved in things along those lines in his life, but I prefer the Sherlock Holmes mysteries to this book especially because the writings on Holmes aren't focused in that direction. This book was interesting at first, when it was a suspense/fictional mystery, but became redundant once I got past the middle because, regretfully, it metamorphisized into a mystic "religion"/philosophy book. If it starts with what reads as a suspenseful mystery fiction, I might have enjoyed it if it hadn't lagged and then strayed so long and deeply into the mystical/philosophical realm.
This is a very entertaining work by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who wrote of course the splendid Sherlock Holmes stories he is so deservidly famous for. But he also wrote many other works, among them this fine story of a young man and his family moving to a very remote area of Scotland to be the landlord of a relative's estate. Shortly after they are settled in they meet a new neighbor, a retired English General and his family. The General is pleasant enough to them but his odd and reclusive behavior begin to manifest itself in ways which the author can't understand. Doyle includes mystery and suspense in this book, but as often the case in many of his other non-Sherlock Holmes stories, such as The Captain of the Polestar, there is some mysticism or occult part that is very significant to the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope that you do too.
